Job Title: Full Stack Engineer (Backend-Focused)

Work Mode: 100% Remote

Employment Type: Independent Contractor (hourly pay; no benefits; contractor responsible for own taxes)

Contract Duration: 6 months, with possibility of extension

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

About the Role

We are seeking a kind, curious, and highly collaborative Full Stack Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and building exceptional customer experiences.

This is a backend-focused full stack role, where backend engineering is the primary foundation of the position. We are looking for engineers with strong experience in Java and Kotlin to design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems. Experience with React is beneficial but not mandatory, as frontend work is a secondary aspect of the role.

You will work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to build customer-facing applications, contribute to technical decisions, and help evolve the engineering platform.

Technology Stack

Backend: Java, Kotlin, Ruby (nice to have), Elixir (strong plus)

Frontend: React (preferred)

APIs & Integration: GraphQL, REST APIs, Kafka

Architecture: Microservices, Distributed Systems, Event-Driven Architecture

Cloud & Serverless: AWS Lambda

Databases: PostgreSQL, DynamoDB

Tools: Git

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software development experience preferred.
• Strong backend development experience with Java and Kotlin.
• Experience designing and developing scalable backend services and APIs.
• Experience working with REST APIs, GraphQL, Git, and modern software development practices.
• Solid understanding of microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and database design.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and AWS Lambda.
• React experience is preferred but not required.
• Ruby experience is nice to have.
• Experience with Elixir is a strong plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative engineering mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience implementing or maintaining Kafka-based event streaming solutions.
• Experience working with Elixir in production environments.
• Experience decomposing monolithic applications into microservices.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and service-oriented architectures.
• Interest in retail, e-commerce, luxury consignment, sustainability, or circular economy business models.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, scalable, performant, and testable software solutions.
• Build and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using Java and Kotlin.
• Contribute to React-based frontend applications when needed.
• Participate in technical architecture discussions and engineering decisions.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver impactful features.
• Review pull requests and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to team members.
• Participate in pair programming and knowledge-sharing activities across the engineering team.
• Deploy production-ready code and support applications throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Lead and contribute to significant engineering initiatives while helping drive platform evolution.
• Mentor fellow engineers through collaboration, code reviews, and technical guidance.
